BUPA Great Winter Run

Only one Moray Roadrunner, that I know of, entered the above 5K in Edinburgh on Saturday.  Frances Wardhaugh thoroughly enjoyed her run and finished in a very respectable time of 30.24.

Well done.

Hangover Run

The first event on the Moray Roadrunners' calendar took place on Monday 2nd January with the Club’s annual ‘Hangover Run’ and Senior Prize Giving event at Miltonduff Hall. Conditions underfoot were slippy and wet in places but runs of varying distances were still enjoyed by many both on and off road.

As always, Jim McWilliam announced the senior champions for the year based upon performances in at least 6 of the nominated championship races. Congratulations for 2011 go to Colin Green who picked up his 2nd championship in 3 years and to Sarah Houston for her 5th consecutive success. Many thanks to Jim for his meticulous work in translating race times into age-graded performances and a big thank you to everyone for their continuing support of Moray Road Runners.

All the very best for 2012.

Hangover Run

The club's first event of the year takes place, as per usual, on Monday 2nd January at Miltonduff Hall.  This takes the form of a non-competitive run, starting from the hall at approximately 11am, with various groups running perhaps 5 or 7 miles or even going for a walk in the woods.  Refreshments will be provided in the hall (donations of food would be appreciated), followed by the presentation of the senior club awards.

Members, families and friends all welcome.

17 marathons for the year!

Dave Green has ended this running year with a total of 17 marathons, wearing his Moray Roadrunner vest the length and breadth of the country.

Abingdon Marathon is one of the oldest marathons in the UK, and on 16th October Dave ran it in a time of 3.59.15, despite having a calf injury at the time.  Luton Marathon followed four weeks later on 20th November, a 3 lap undulating course, run mainly on main roads around Luton and once again Dave finished under 4 hours.  Next on the list was Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon, near Cork in Ireland, on 10th December, where Dave joined a friend from Northern Ireland who was completing his 100th marathon - the first person from Northern Ireland to make this achievement.  They ran around this scenic course on a sunny but frosty day in 4hrs 12mins.  Finally, on 18th December, Dave ran a 27.5 mile race at Portsmouth, 20 miles on beach and paths, the remainder on roads, again finishing under 4 hours.

Well done on a successful year and good luck for next year.

Sportscotland Community Sports Hubs

The community sports hub initiative is sportscotland's contribution to the Scottish Government's 2014 Legacy plan.  It is an exciting and innovative approach to the development of sport in local clubs.  It is designed to increase the number of people of all ages participating in sport in communities across Scotland.  More details can be found through the following link, which has now been updated with the proposed locations.  Over the next few months there is likely to be an increased interest in this project, therefore any clubs interested in taking this further should contact me for further details.

Mince Pie Relays

A mixture of juniors, seniors, coaches and parents braved the icy conditions for our annual Mince Pie Relays and Junior Prize Giving.  A revised course at Morriston Playing Fields hosted our teams where cheating has become the norm and it was clear from the offset that this year was no exception, with some extremely 'fast' relay legs being witnessed.  Unbelievably, renowned cheater Frances Wardhaugh's conscience obviously got the better of her and, for the first time in memory, decided to run the correct route thus winning favour with the 'race officials' and securing 1st place for her team!  Well done to everyone who took part.

The junior prize giving followed, where the exploits of many of our young athletes were outlined to the assembled audience.  The Club is blessed with an array of talented individuals who compete regularly at local, regional and national level, and their current rankings within a range of disciplines bodes well for the future.  Particular mention this year goes to Lara Dalgarno for her ongoing commitment to Moray Roadrunners, her willingness to compete in events for the benefit of the Club and her all round attitude to training that is an example to us all.

Finally to our Club Champion, Emma Bowie, for her outstanding season that not only saw her break the Scottish Hammer Record in her age category, but also drew praise from the current World Record Holder who was impressed by her performance at a recent throwing Master Class.

U11 - Grace Whelan / Andrew Stoker

U13 - Lauren Bell / No award

U15 - Dionne Milne / Ben Mitchell

U17 - Bethany Wilson / James Wilson & Blair Little

Endeavour Award - Lara Dalgarno

Club Champion - Emma Bowie

A big thank you to all the coaches, parents and members for your ongoing support and here's to a successful 2012.

Turkey Trot

What a great day this year's Lossiemouth 10 Mile Turkey Trot turned out to be, with the wintry weather earlier in the week giving way to fine running conditions enjoyed by the 154 runners who made it to the start line.  The race also incorporated the North District 10 Mile Championships and there were some excellent performances.  The race was won by Forres Harriers' Gordon Lennox (56.41) with team mate, Paul Rogan (57.08), in 2nd place.  The RAF Junior X-Country Champion, William Jackson (58.15), finished 3rd, closely followed by our own Dan Leedham in 58.28.  Well done to Simon Dobbs (61.17) and Colin Green (61.39) who picked up 2nd and 3rd Vet respectively, with Simon also finishing 3rd in the North District 10 Mile Vet Champs.

The ladies' race saw Melissa Whyte continue to dominate, producing a fine run to finish 5th overall in a time of 59.16, with Vivienne Bruce (Metro Aberdeen, 64.09) and Sarah Leibnitz from Inverness Harriers (65.27) finishing 2nd and 3rd.  1st Vet was our own Oonagh Wilson (4th, 65.35) who also picked up silver in the North District 10 Mile Veteran Race.  Ably assisted by Louise Cartmell in her first 10 Mile race (66.47) and Sarah Houston (73.41), Moray Roadrunners won the team prize.  Well done ladies and also to Sarah who picked up 2nd Supervet and Gold Medal in the Supervet Champs.

Well done to everyone else - Ally Campbell (62.54), Brian Milne (70.44), Bill Murray (76.32), Claire Reilly (82.22), John MacGregor (83.33), Amanda Strang (85.00) and Frances Wardhaugh (96.47) - and a final thank you to everyone who made today's race a great success.

Coaching Education

Assistant Coach Course - 26th/27th November 2011 0900-1700hrs, Fraserburgh South Park School, Fraserburgh

Due to high demand and following the successful Coach Education courses held in Aberdeen and Inverurie in September, I am pleased to announce that a Coaching Assistant Course will be held in Fraserburgh the weekend of 26th and 27th November.  It is also worth noting that candidates aged 18-30 are eligible for FREE attendance on this course, providing they are signed up to deliver coaching for 30hrs over the next 12 months.  For more information and to book your place, please contact Alasdhair Love (Alasdhair.love@scottishathletics.org.uk)

The role of the Coaching Assistant is to support a Coach in the delivery of athletics sessions.  Coaching Assistants may be working with Children's Coaches, Athletics Coaches or Event Group Development Coaches, therefore the range of knowledge required for this role is wide.  When qualified, a Coaching Assistant works under the guidance of a licensed Coach and may deliver units of the session on behalf of the Supervising Coach.  Although a Supervising Coach must always be present, a Coaching Assistant may coach in another area of the venue as long as they are delivering the session created by the Supervising Coach.

Monumental Challenge

Winner of the above event at Fochabers on Sunday was Simon Pride of Forres Harriers in 32.35.  Three ladies from Moray Roadrunners also took part.  Norma Beaton finished 3rd lady (18th overall) in 41.59, Claire Reilly finished 37th in 46.47 and Jenni Coelho finished 50th in 58.12.

Well done ladies.

New Committee for 2011-2012

Despite the poor attendance of members at last night's AGM, the meeting and the election of the committee went ahead.

Gareth and Linda's willingness to continue in their roles of chairperson and secretary, respectively, was well received, as was the election of Amanda Strang to the position of treasurer.  Retiring treasurer, Simon Dobbs, will remain on the committee.   Colin Green was elected men's captain and retiring captain, Brian, will also remain on the committee.  Elspeth will continue for another year as ladies' captain.  Rosie, Susan and Keith were also re-elected as committee members, thus completing the line up of a great team with the responsibility of running a great club!

Gareth expressed thanks to retiring committee member, Ken Anderson, who has been a stalwart of the committee in recent years and his contribution to the organising of our new cross country course was very much appreciated.  Ken will continue his valuable work with the juniors.

And I shall continue as webmaster.

The annual subscription for all club members will remain the same for another year, with an added bonus for full members, both senior and junior.  Scottish Athletics Membership will now be paid by the club.  This takes effect immediately, so members will no longer be notified by SAL when their annual fees are due.  New members will be notified by the club of their SAL membership number.  However, MRR membership must be paid in full and is due 1st November!
