Monaughty Forest Run
A good turnout of athletes for the final run in the Forest Run Series and not a midge in sight - the big black flies had eaten them all!! An enjoyable race, however, won by Scott Fraser from Lothian and followed in 2nd place by MRR Daniel Leedham in 25.03. Elspeth Jenkins was 2nd Lady on the night and 1st for the series.
Kenny Wilson finished 1st in the U21 category, making it a clean sweep for the series and a deserved winner of the U21 trophy donated by Andrew Little.
In the secondary school race, MRR Lewis Sim was 1st to cross the line in 12.13.
Callum Alexander was also rewarded for his consistent good running in each race, winning the U16 trophy for the series.

Farewell to Melissa
The committee are making arrangements to have a club social gathering at the Miltonduff Hall on Sunday 18th July from 2-4.00pm, to bid farewell to our club secretary who leaves the area in August. All members and their families are invited and donations of food and drink would be appreciated.
Any further information may be gleaned from any committee member.
Follow the Herring XIV 10K
The sunshine on Sunday was good for spectators, but not for the runners as they made the long climb to the Durn Hill with no shade in sight. It was very warm, which reflected on most (but not all!) times for the race. Frankie Barton (Keith & District) was 1st in 34.48. MRRs John MacGregor (45.19), Linda Smith (50.07) and Barbara Bowie (51.55, 1st LSV) saw Mr Barton at the finish!

The toughest of the Forest Runs, I think, and a great cross-country course run in perfect conditions. Simon Dobbs (3rd) was first MRR home in 23.55 and Kenny Wilson (9th) first U21. Elspeth Jenkins continues her good form finishing 2nd lady (36th place) in 30.00.

Marathon Moonwalk
Never usually practicing what she
preaches, Coach Carol set about her own personal achievements at the
weekend. Carol took part in the Moonwalk with her youngest daughter Emma,
to walk the 26.2 mile through the night, round the streets of Edinburgh in her
bra (and her t-shirt).
Just to let you know, she feels
the pain of stiffness that you all feel after your long hard runs! But
what an achievement! Looking just to finish, rather than how fast, was the
aim, but they were rewarded after all their hard training with a time of 6hrs
57mins.
Never say to her again "rep
after rep - you do it, see how it feels" ........... that won't work, now
she's a fully fledged athlete.

Well done Carol and Emma.

Monaughty Forest Run Challenge
I have it on good authority that Scott Fraser, who is Scotland's top ranked orienteer, happens to be up here on business at the same time as the above race, and will be running. With a 5 mile time this year of 24.40, this will be a chance for our top local runners to test themselves against the talents of athletes from the Central Belt (he might be bringing another similar standard runner with him). Scott will also be presenting the under 21 trophies that night.
Scott is here to meet reps from Moray Council and Visit Scotland in preparation for the 6-day festival of orienteering which will be in Moray in August 2013. This event will attract over 4,000 runners who will compete in 6 events during the week. So we have 3 years to practice our navigation!
Orienteers are throwing down the gauntlet!
Ben Aigan Hill Race
Paul Rogan (Forres Harriers) won the above race on Wednesday in 31.01, dipping first on the line before Dan Whitehead (Cosmic).
MRR's Simon Dobbs finished 3rd (31.24), Colin Green 9th (33.45) and Ewan Paterson 10th (34.22).

Club Secretary
Attention! The MRR Committee are urgently seeking a new secretary to replace the current person in post, who is moving away from the area this summer. This is an enjoyable and easy post to fill, that requires no more than a couple of hours each month and an interest in the running community. If you would like to know more, email the current secretary at morayroadrunners@live.co.uk
Coastal Run around Britain
MRR will be picking up the baton for this fun relay event at Roseisle, which aims, with the support of local running and jogging clubs nationwide, to carry a baton around the entire length of Britain's coastline.
MRR's part in the relay takes place on Thursday 1st July between 2pm and 6pm.
If you would like to join in and run part of the stretch between Roseisle and Lossiemouth, please contact a committee member.
NB: this is NOT a racing event and runners of all abilities are encouraged to take part.
Moray Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K
The committee for the above races are looking for volunteers to help set up the courses for their races in September. If you could lend a hand, please contact Keith McArthur at MRR.

Roseisle Forest Run
Another great turnout for the second run in this popular series. We started on the sand on the beach and continued on sandy tracks which led to sandy hills - lots of sand there then! But it's a great wee run, the weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed it.
First home for MRR was Colin Green in 6th place in 23.35, closely followed by Kenny Wilson (1st U21) in 8th place in 23.58. First MRR lady was Elspeth Jenkins in 25th place (2nd lady overall) in 26.55.

Benromach 10K
Forres Harriers once again hosted the third and final race of the Northern Scot 10K Series. There was a very good turnout of 263 runners, including 23 Moray Roadrunner members, who all probably enjoyed the first half of the race rather more than the second half running into the wind.
First MRR over the line was Gareth Jenkins in 4th place (1st M40) in 35.17. George Sim was next in 15th place (1st M60) in 37.07, closely followed by Colin Green (17th) 37.35, Daniel Leedham (18th) 37.40, Ewan Paterson (21st) 37.47, John Little (27th) 39.12 and Keith McArthur (32nd) 39.45. UK Coastal Event - Inverness to Aberdeen
Regarding 'Coasting Around Britain', the baton set off from Blackpool more than a week ago and is now sporting a kilt as it makes its way today (Tuesday) into Dumfries! It's on schedule and you can track its course on the website www.coastersgb.co.uk
If it remains on schedule it will come into Wick at the end of June and be picked up by Inverness Harriers, who will take it round the Black Isle. Thereafter, our programme is as follows:
Wed 30 June - 4.30pm Firth Bridge (IH); 6.30pm Fort George (IH to NRR); 8.30pm Culbin Cloddymoss (NRR to FH) - FH may do part of their leg in the late evening.
Thurs 1 July - 9am Cloddymoss (FH and JSFor); 2pm Roseisle (FH to MRR); 6pm Lossiemouth (MRR to EAAC and JSE); 8pm Garmouth Hotel (EAAC to SR)
Fri 2 July - 9am Garmouth (SR and JSFoch); 12.45pm Buckie (SR to JSB); 3pm Cullen (JSB to K&D); 7.15pm Banff (K&D to TAG); 9.30pm New Aberdour (TAG to FRC)
Sat 3rd July - 9am New Aberdour (FRC and JSFr); 12.30pm St Fergus (FRC to JSP); 5pm Collieston (JSP to AM); 7.30pm Beach Boulevard (AM to next section contact)
It seems that we are completely organised with plenty participants and routes drafted, except for the Banff to New Aberdour section. Frankie/Steven/Stephen, if there's anything we can do to make sure that the baton can keep going through this stretch, please let me know. We don't want to be the leg responsible for the baton stopping!
Malcolm, please note that your Garmouth contact will be George Young, and not Rachel (who'll be away at the time).
In the meantime, the publicity for the event is increasing now that the baton is underway and we will be feeding the newspapers with info nearer the time of our participation. You may wish, however, to make sure that your local photographer comes along on the day, and that you get various snaps taken for the Coasters website etc.
If you require any more info please get in touch.
Kind regards, Nick Brown

April Marathons
The Club has done well this month, having representatives at three marathons - Paris, Lochaber and London.
Anna McClure really enjoyed her first ever marathon. She went to Paris and completed her run in a time of 4.30.26. And she is looking forward to her next marathon already!
Veterans Sarah Houston and Garry Henderson went to Fort William to compete in the Lochaber marathon, finishing in 3.33.14 and 3.51.46 respectively.
4 members completed the London marathon at the weekend - Simon Dobbs finished in the superb time of 2.43, Gareth Jenkins also finished extremely well in 2.56, John MacGregor ran a very respectable 3.52 (to celebrate his 60th birthday!) and David Green ran a commendable 5.01, after a week of ill-health.
Well done all.

Speyvalley 10
The Club will once again be hosting the Speyvalley 10 in September and are looking for volunteers to organise this very simple, but fun, event with the complete backing of the MRR committee. If you have a little time to spare and would like to learn more about organising a race, please contact any member of the committee for further details.
UK Coastal Event
A call has gone out for walkers, joggers, and runners to take part in the 'Coasting Around Britain' event this summer. All groups from the Walk-Jog-Run in Moray Partnership have already agreed to be involved.
Cioch Mhor Hillrace
Colin Green and Daniel Leedham went to Dingwall on Saturday to compete in the above hillrace. A record 45 runners took part, an encouraging sign that more runners are taking the challenge of hill running - perhaps more MRRs should try out these small, well organised and excellent value for money races!
The 8 mile course was an 'out and back' course. A strong wind made the 'out' part tough, but with the wind behind, the 'back' part was a bit easier. The winner was Alex Keith from HBT, who stormed into an early lead and finished 6 mins ahead of the 2nd place runner, with a very impressive time of 69 mins. Colin and Daniel, both running the course for the first time, finished 79 mins (9th) and 80 mins (11th) respectively. Despite the strong wind, and having to wade through a small river twice, both found it a very enjoyable race.
Well done to you both.

Full results now on results page for the Glenlivet 10K. Well done to Colin Green, first MRR over the line in 9th place in 38.25, Blair Little in 23rd place in 41.16 (great time - first senior race perhaps!) and John Little in 35th place in 43.00. Norma Beaton was first MRR lady in 73rd place in 46.41. Other club members competing were Iain MacKenzie 51.59, Amanda Strang 56.22, Lesley-Ann Morrison 64.00 and Jenni Coelho 64.20.
The Glenlivet 10K
The Glenlivet 10k was held this Sunday for the first time, encouraging around 400 runners to enter the race. Congratulations must go to Paul Corrigan and his team for a very well organised race.
The weather was the hottest and brightest so far this year, which was great for spectators but not so good for racing the undulating course. Despite the heat and the hills I think everyone enjoyed the race, and although it’s not a course for getting a PB, I hope it features on the race calendar for years to come.
Report by Colin Green
I do not have a full list of results as yet, but I believe the following club members took part: Colin Green, Amanda Strang, Norma Beaton, John Little, Iain Mackenzie, Lesley-Anne Morrison and Jenni Coelho.
The Knockfarrel Hillrace
On Saturday, 58 runners took part in this short but tough race. Paul Rogan (Forres Harriers) continued his excellent early season form, mastering the testing climbs and very muddy sections, to come first.
Running for MRR was Daniel Leedham, who did well with the uphill sections but found the downhill sections tricky, and finished a very good 10th. Also running for MRR was Colin Green, who just found the whole course tough, but (in a sadistical way) very enjoyable, and finished 13th.
Well done to Highland Hillrunners for organising a great wee race.
Report courtesy of Colin.
Well done lads.
MRR 10K & 3K Fun Run
First impressions today, before the start of the races, was it was too cold and too windy! But actually, the conditions turned out to be very good for racing - nice and cool, and the wind not too bothersome at all. The tussle between Frankie Barton (Keith & District) and Paul Rogan (Forres Harriers) continued today, this time for 1st place, and finished with Frankie 2 secs ahead of Paul, in 34.36. First lady was Melissa Whyte (Inverness Harriers) in 8th place overall, in a time of 35.51.
There was a good turnout of Moray Roadrunners, despite many others having to help at the race and behind the scenes. Simon Dobbs was 1st MRR over the line in 5th place (4th V40) in 35.15. Donald Shand was next in 11th place (1st SM) in 36.22, followed by George Sim in 14th place (2nd MSV) in 36.50. Colin Green finished 16th in 36.59 and John Little equalled his PB (37.37), finishing in 19th place. Elspeth Jenkins was 2nd lady overall, crossing the line in 33rd place, in 41.25. Brian Milne was next MRR home with a PB (42.50) followed by Gordon Cowie (43.03) and Norma Beaton (43.44). Sarah Houston was 1st FSV in 46.00. Iain MacKenzie ran a PB (48.02), followed by Linda Smith (49.09), Barbara Bowie, 3rd FSV, (52.21), Amanda Strang (54.01), Rachel McClure (55.09), Menita Dickenson (57.56), Rosie Campbell (60.14) and Jenni Coelho (61.04).
There was also a healthy turnout of Moray Roadrunners in the 3K. Blair Little led the field and crossed the line in 1st place in 10.46. Lewis Sim (11.52) and Toby Dobbs (11.59) were 3rd and 4th respectively, followed by Michael Laing (13.12), Callum Alexander (13.15), Cameron Main (13.21), Dionne Milne, 3rd girl, 14th place overall (13.39), Ben Ritchie (13.44), Hamish Sim (13.52), Andrew Little (14.09), Lara Dalgarno (14.29), Kirsty Shand (14.46), Kenneth McIvor (15.55), Nicola Dalgarno (16.21), Rebecca Nally (16.22), Bethany Paterson (16.50) and Cameron Cruickshank (18.02).

Congratulations to all the prize winners and well done to everyone.
The committee must be thanked for all their hard work in the organisation of today's races and also thanks to all the time keepers and assistants on the finish line, all who helped set up the course, marshalled, catered for the competitors by providing and serving sandwiches and teas, and last, but by no means least, Mary Bain and her team who compiled the results.

Garioch - British Uni 400m Champion!
Ian Garioch won his first British title on Sunday at Sheffield indoor track. Ian was competing in his favoured event, the 400m. He ran an indoor PB in the semi but sliced that even further by taking the favourite, Patrick North, on the line. Ian was delighted by his win and a new indoor best of 48.47. He was so determined to get to the line first that he tumbled over the finish and got a few nasty burns from the track! Don't think he will be worrying about that though!
Well done Ian.

Chair, Frank Dick, and Head Coach, Laurier Primeau, and the relevant Regional Athletics Manager, will be attending some or all of the meetings. Member coaches, athletes, administrators and public sector partner organisations are welcome to attend.

Scottish Athletics Chair, Frank Dick, said: "Town Halls will be an annual forum for expressing opinion, generating ideas, enriching understanding, voicing concerns and addressing issues. They are yours to use as you feel best fits what you consider to be the pursuit of excellence for athletics in Scotland, be that school, club, regional, national or international level. I look forward to seeing you there".

Hangover Run
What a great start to the MRR calendar with more runners turning up than expected, given the poor road conditions. Moray Roadrunners, young and old, were joined by members of Forres Harriers and most ran a 6.8 mile route through the snow on a beautiful calm morning. Some went for a gentle walk! Then all enjoyed the refreshments, thanks to the many donations. The proceedings concluded with the presentation of the Gents and Ladies Club Championship. These were awarded to Colin Green and Sarah Houston, who gathered 440 and 478 points respectively from their 6 best races over 2009, chosen from the MRR club championship qualifying races. Congratulations to you both.
Thanks for the photographs Carol. Now on pictures page, courtesy of John.
Nairn Turkey Trot
A few MRRs braved the cold to join another 85 runners in the above annual event, held on Boxing Day. This 5K (approx.) is a Fun Run with a difference - each competitor must predict their finish time and run without a watch. The race started and finished at Nairn Harbour, running along the East Beach because of the icy conditions. Well done to Norma Beaton, Brian Milne and Dionne Milne.

Hangover Run
The first outing of the New Year for the club, which this year will include a run for the juniors, will start as per usual at the Miltonduff Hall - 10.00 am for a 10.30 am start - followed by refreshments (all donations gratefully received) and the presentation of our Club Champions' awards.
All club members and friends are welcome.
Turkey Trot
Apart from a cold and frosty morning, it was perfect weather conditions for this popular, well organised, annual event. There were 200 competitors of which 10 were Moray Roadrunners. Colin Green and Daniel Leedham both finished under the hour, both for the first time - Colin 11th in 59.20, Daniel 13th in 59.45. Xmas Pie Relays
MRRs annual end of year relays took place in the grounds of Elgin Academy today. This event gives the juniors and seniors a chance to get together and have a bit of fun!
Numbers were very low this year due to an indoor competition taking place in Aberdeen's new track, but those who did attend still managed to have an enjoyable morning.
With only enough for 3 teams of 5, the first 3 runners in each team ran the perimeter of Elgin Academy's very frosted football pitches. Lara Dalgarno, Beth Patterson and Nicola Dalgarno set off to the cheers of their team mates.
These three young girls have only been running for a short time and did well for their teams. Lara came home first, handing over to Gavin McDonald who was followed by Hamish Sim and Callum Alexander. They ran well, closing the top place run of Gavin.
George Sim (on his first short lap) tried to follow the correct course, but was confused when Frances Wardhaugh started her loop even before her handover was near the finish line and then decided to change the route! (on more than one occasion!) Santa tried to follow the course (Jack Christie) and managed to keep them within sight.
Toby Dobbs, Keith McArthur and Beth Wilson were the next off on the first of the long laps, incorporating Morriston Playing fields. Toby and Keith were doing very well and then Beth just managed to glide herself into first position! Beth has been listening to her mother, Oonagh, too much who, along with Julie Goodfellow, tried to sabotage the leaders by telling a young innocent Toby that he had to go back to the start! This didn't deter him and the last of the runners set off!
Now the true colours started to show in Moray Goodfellow and Jamsie Wilson!!!!! Being chased down by George Sim, who had no chance against these young guns, they seemed to lose sight of the course and just made it up as they went along! They fought out the finish and thought that they had done enough until they realised that the finish had moved...oops!
Thanks for the wee dance at the top of the hill Moray! Kenny - you would have been proud of Jamsie, he certainly knows how to cut corners!
Well done all! Thanks to all helpers and to John Christie for his photographic skills, all of which are already on the pictures page.
Have a Merry Christmas and be ready for your tough training in the New Year!

Tain Hill Trail Race
The starting line-up of 63 competitors for the above 12 miler included 4 veteran Moray Roadrunners. Boggy ground and churned up forest tracks did not deter Gordon Cowie, Tom Main, John MacGregor and Gilbert Bain from enjoying their run as they finished in 31st, 35th, 46th and 47th place respectively.
Well done. Full results on results page.
Mince Pie Relays
This annual event is to take place on Saturday 12th December, meeting at Bishopmill Primary School at 10.00 am, where competitors young and old, good runners and not-so-good, are divided into teams and give themselves silly names! They are then sent on their merry way, in relays, around the school and Morriston playing fields, each with one purpose in mind - to be the first team home ( some have been known to cut corners!) Fancy dress is optional. There are even prizes to be won. All good Christmas fun followed by refreshments in the old school hall, donations for which would be most welcome. Junior prize giving concludes the proceedings. All club members, families and friends are invited.
Garioch in Winning Form
Ian Garioch, who is studying Geology at Aberdeen University, was competing in the Universities Fresher Match at Kelvin Hall. He won the 60m in a new indoor PB of 7.22 and the 200m, also a PB, in 22.71. Aberdeen University also won the 4x200m.
A very busy day for Ian with 3 rounds in each discipline.
Congratulations and good luck for the coming season.

Annual General Meeting 2009
Despite the disappointing turnout for the A.G.M. last night, the election of office bearers and committee members went ahead, with most positions being filled.
Continuing with their good work of the preceding year are Keith McArthur (Chairperson), Melissa McGregor (Secretary), Paul Taylor (Treasurer), Colin Green (Men's Captain) and committee members Simon Dobbs and Doreen Christie. Welcomed as new committee members were Ken Anderson and Brian Milne.
The position of Ladies' Captain was not filled and if anyone is interested please get in touch with any member of the committee. Colin would be happy to provide details of what is required as a club captain and the small amount of work that it entails.
Club fees for senior members are to increase by £5 to £25. These will become due 1st November.
Thankyou and good luck to the new committee in the coming year.

Hard work, with only 5 seconds time difference in their individual laps, which paid dividends as they also set a new female course record time of 2.51.33. Well done ladies.

A Moray Roadrunner Abroad
The 3rd Ultra Marathon of Gran Sasso was 49.6 km/31 miles on tarmac and gravel road in the mountainous area of Central Italy, the region known as Abruzzo. There was 750 metres of ascent including 200 metres in the final 4K. It was shortened slightly because the earthquake in April caused a landslide to block the usual route. The race started from and finished at a small hill village called Castel del Monte. There were 94 runners, all except one from Italian running clubs. It was an early start so most of the run wasn't too hot. However by the final 10K the heat had built up to 25+ degrees. The winner completed the race in 3 hours 20 mins. and Gordon Cowie managed to finish in 4 hours 3 mins., making him 14th overall and 2nd in the over 55 category. The race was very well run and the organisers were very welcoming and would be delighted to have more Scottish runners in the future!! Anyone interested please contact Gordon.
Well done Gordon.
After the race Gordon was interviewed and, although an interpreter was to hand, he managed to conduct the interview in Italian!
Moray 3K Series
45 Adults and 20 Juniors took part in the 1st race of the Moray 3K Series held in Cooper Park last Wednesday evening. Results are available now on the results page. Well done to all who took part.

her 17th birthday on Thursday,
travelled to Stretford at the weekend to take part in the British
Milers Club 1500m.
A personal best has eluded Gemma for 2 seasons but she was on form on
Saturday finishing 2nd in a lifetime best of 4.27.22 (a new club record too),
this was just
under 5secs off her previous set in 2007.
Website
Please note that as of 30th June 2009 the website will no longer be updated until a new webmaster is found. I'm using these last few days to make the website as user friendly as possible to anyone visiting it after the 30th. I can't promise to be able to put any new information about results or events on in this time so please don't send any requests to me from this time forward.
The website will still appear as it is at the moment with the normal archive of photos, news, results and links, so please keep visiting and soon an announcement of a new webmaster will be available.
It has been an enjoyable time managing the website over the last year and I hope to still play a big part in Moray Road Runners when I'm back into my training again in the winter. I'd like to thank everyone for their help in the past and for all the positive comments I've had from people about the work I've put into the website.

INTERVAL TRAINING – ORIENTEERING STYLE!
Please find below an open invitation to a new type of training session organised by Moravian Orienteers on the 9th of July.
To Moray Road Runners Members,
My name’s Mike Rodgers – some of you might recognise me as the organiser of the Culbin Forest Run. I started off life as a road runner when I was a bit faster than I am now but I’m now a member of Moravian Orienteering Club. Having been involved in most forms of running, I’m on a bit of a personal crusade to try to make orienteering more accessible to everyone as I understand why many runners have no interest in running around tough, complex areas where you might spend most of your time lost and totally fed up unless you’re reasonably good with maps.
Our club has recently discovered urban orienteering - a new form of orienteering that seems to be making a big impression down south. There have been a few very popular events in some of the big English cities – even Central London! By bringing orienteering on to the streets it’s making it accessible to everyone and it’s something that might add a bit of interest to your training evenings. I’d therefore like to invite anyone interested to come to an interval training session we’re organising with Forres Harriers on Thursday 9th July based on this idea of urban orienteering.
Paul Rogan invited me to run a session in early June for Forres Harriers and we set up a course around Forres where you had to visit 20 checkpoints at various places around the town as quickly as possible. The idea was that you ran as fast as you could once you’d decided where you were going, and then your recovery phase came while you checked the map for where to go next. There are always a few different routes you can take between the checkpoints, and by using electronic timing chips we provided a printout at the end showing your time for each leg. Those who didn’t fancy the navigation side of things too much just teamed up with someone who did. Some went off as individuals and others went in groups of up to 4, but with a map each.
The reaction we had from the Harriers took us completely, and very pleasantly, by surprise. Everyone really enjoyed the session, which took runners between 40 and 60 minutes to cover about 8 Km. By popular demand, we’ve been asked to do the session again and we’d love to have some Moray Road Runners along to see what you make of it. So just come along to Grant Park at 6.30 pm on Thursday 9th July (by the toilet block). It’s the Monaughty Forest Run the evening before, so if you want to find out more, just look out for the tall skinny bloke with the light blue Moravian running top about half way down the field. I should also be at Quarrelwood on 24th June.
We as a club would like to become much more a part of the local rung scene, and we hope you’ll be able to join us. If there’s enough interest, we might even create an orienteering map of Elgin one day.
Best regards,
Mike Rodgers

Webmaster Vacancy
The club is still looking for a webmaster! Due to maternity the current webmaster will only be able to continue in the post for a short time. This is a voluntary position and requires a time commitment of one to two evenings a week depending on how busy the race calendar is. The job could easily be shared between two people and does not require any financial outlay. All training would be given and it is not necessary for the webmaster to sit on the club committee. If you have a passion for running and a bit of spare time the role is a great challenge and can be very rewarding. If a suitable candidate is not found shortly then unfortunately the website will no longer be updated. Please contact strangamanda@hotmail.com for full details if you are interested.
