JUNIOR
SECTION |
Membership Form |
The Moray Roadrunners Junior section meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6pm to 7pm, at the Morriston Track (April to October), Elgin Academy Games Hall (Tuesdays - October to March) and Bishopmill Primary School (Thursdays - October to March). Juniors are welcome from 9 years upward. Parents are asked to contact the coaches before registering their child, owing to a shortage of coaches.
The children are put into a group with a coach and given training appropriate to
their needs and ability. Progress
within the group, or into another group, is as a result of the efforts and
determination of the athlete and the coaches.
Training covers running, throwing and jumping skills to prepare them for
competition in any of the following type of events:
cross country, forest runs, track distances from 100 metres to 3000
metres and field events such as long and high jump, shot putt, discus and
javelin. By offering a range of
different events, young athletes are not subjected to overuse of limbs and
joints at any one discipline. They
are expected to cover all events throughout the year.
It is very encouraging for the coaches, who are all unpaid volunteers, when
youngsters try some of the winter or summer competitions.
However, this is not compulsory.
During winter the athletes do running as well as circuits and conditioning work.
We also offer a wide range of the Norwich Union Indoor Awards.
These aim to improve the athletes’ fitness and ability at many
different disciplines. There is a
cross-country league for 9 years upward with 6 races each season.
For the enthusiasts there are District and National Cross Country
Championships.
Throughout the summer the different track and field events are practised, as it
is hoped that the athletes will participate for the club in league competition.
Again this is for 9 years upward and there are 4 meets at Inverness track
during the summer. The keen athlete
also has the opportunity to participate in District, National and Schools
championships. For the track &
field specialist there is now the opportunity of Indoor competition in Aberdeen
during the winter months.
Competition is within age groups starting with U11 years (must be 9 yrs.), U13,
U15, U17, U20 and then seniors. There
are both male and female sections within each age group.
In order to compete athletes must be registered with a club and also with Scottish Athletics and wear a club vest (purchased from the club). All information is given to athletes as and when they are ready for competition.
